Brahms

Brahms is a surname that will most commonly recognised when used to describe the world famous pianist and composer, Johannes Brahms. The individual from Germany was one of the greatest composers and pianists and died in 1897. Brahms is considered to be of the main influential individuals from the Romantic period. He spent most of his time growing up in Vienna, Austria but was in fact born in Hamburg. When Brahms was in Vienna he was considered to of the leading individuals within the music scene The popularity of Brahms can not be questioned, he is often referred to as being part of the Three Bs; the other two individuals being Johann Sebsatian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven.

As well as composing for the piano Brahms also composed for chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, for voice and for chorus. During his lifetime Brahms worked with some of the biggest performers of all time including the pianist Clara Schumnaan and the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms was a perfectionist and for this reason much of his work was never published. The work that was published by Brahms has become the modern concert repertoire. The work that did not meet the high standard set by Brahms was destroyed by him.

As well as being regarded as one of the greatest composers and pianists, Brahms is often referred to as a traditionalist and an innovator. All of the music that was created by the German individual is created through the use of compositional techniques of the Baroque and Classical masters.

Some people found the work produced by Brahms to be too academic but this was dismissed by the experts in music. Much of his work was admired by major figures including Arnold Schoenberg and Edward Elgar.
